7 July (arrival) -14 July (departure) 2019
Tuition fee: £400 (£250 for students of performance)
Enjoy a week of total immersion in convent polyphony in one of Italy’s most beautiful medieval towns, perched high in the Ligurian Pre-Alps, but only 40 minutes from the Mediterranean Sea.
Courses are based around Deborah’s home, Casa Convento, a noble house which, until fairly recently, was also home to a group of nuns.
Deborah has been running music courses in Triora for over ten years, and this is the third, with Laurie, focusing on convent music.
Repertoire will be tailored to the course participants but will feature music from the 14th – mid 16th century, including some fascinating new discoveries resulting from Laurie’s researches! We welcome experienced female singers from high sopranos to low altos and tenors.
In addition to around six hours of singing per day, there will be talks, discussions, sessions on vocal technique and plenty of time to relax and enjoy the stunning setting. We tend to end each working day over a glass or two of prosecco on the terrace before going out to eat in the local restaurant. Self- catering options are also available.
We will give a performance on the evening of the 13th July.
LODGING
Accommodation options include shared and single rooms within Casa Convento (definitely NOT cells, but lovely rooms overlooking the mountains); shared and single rooms within local B&Bs and self-catering houses and apartments. Accommodation is additional to the course cost – let us know your needs and we will help arrange it.
GETTING TO TRIORA
Most participants fly to Nice airport and we arrange a bus for the 1 ½ hour round trip to Triora. This has to be timed for the latest arrival (no later than 5pm please) and earliest departure (no earlier than 9am please). Some people choose to hire a car from Nice, or even travel by train. If timings work, the bus from Nice can sometimes pick participants up from the nearest station (Arma di Taggia near the coast) for the final 30 minute trip up to Triora. If anyone wishes to leave Triora after the 14th, there are buses from the town to the station (approx. 3 per day from 6am).
MUSIC
Once booking is closed and repertoire chosen, the music will be emailed as PDF files for printing out yourselves. NB We are sorry but we can’t provide you with printed scores. Some of this music is strictly copyright, and part of Laurie’s ongoing research, so please don’t share with others without first asking Laurie.
NEW FOR 2019: STUDENT BURSARIES
Thanks to the generosity of the University of Southampton, we are able to offer four travel bursaries of £500 each for undergraduate or postgraduate music students coming from outside Europe. We are particularly keen to support students who have an interest in performance practice. Please indicate on the form whether you would like to be considered, letting us know why the bursary will be useful to your studies. Deadline for bursary applications 28 February 2019; we will have a decision for you by 14 March 2019.
