Giesù benign’ et pio, ciascun fedel
hor canti che dal ciel a noi giù piove
sì dolce manna in sì steril deserto
che ci sforzav’al fin pur di morire.
La mann’altro non è che la figura
di quell’ultima cena quando disse Jesu:
quest’è’l mio corpo et quest’il sangue che
si sparge per voi et per gli eletti.
Deh venite a gustare, quant’è soave
tal frutto: quel che ci manda Iddio
Sentirete la sua virtù potente
Et vi fia’l gusto tal: qual è la voglia.
Provi se stess’ognun dipoi ne mangi
Giovin’o vecchio del celeste pane
Il qual ha sua vertù di tal maniera
Che da la vita al buono, al reo la morte.
Kind and devout Jesus, each faithful one
now sings, that from heaven rains down
such sweet manna upon us, in a desert so
sterile that it had forced us almost to the
point of death.
The manna is none other than the
image of that last supper when Jesus said,
“This is my body and this my blood which
is shed for you and for the chosen.”
Come, come and taste, how sweet the
fruit that God sends us is; you shall feel its
powerful virtue and you will taste such
flavour: that is the desire.
Each of you, taste for yourself then
eat, young or old, the celestial Bread,
which has its virtue in the way that it
gives life to the good, to the guilty death.
